The settlers in the area were part of Gonzales County, but their desire for better roads and a shorter distance to the county seat led the settlers to have a separate county. Named in 1848 for Captain Matthew Caldwell, a scout and leader of a group of rangers, Caldwell County was formed on 6 March 1848. Captain Caldwell led the troops in the Battle of Plum Creek and also against Mexico. The county seat is in Lockhart.

Caldwell County

A part of De Witt's Colony, 1825-1836. A part of Gonzales County to 1848. First settlements were on Plum Creek and the San Marcos River. Created March 6, 1848; organized August 7, 1848. Named in honor of Nathew Caldwell, "Old Paint," 1798-1842, soldier-statesman. Signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Commander of the Texas Rangers. Lockhart, the county seat.

The Caldwell County Courthouse was built by Martin, Brynes & Johnston in 1893. Most attribute its design to San Antonio architect Alfred Giles. However, it is more likely that Henri E. M. Guindon is the architect.
