Day Two – Coronado Trail From Lordsburg, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona
(Lisa) “Babe, can we get up now…” “No, Joey, go back to sleep it’s only 3:30!” “Babe, can we get up now?” “Fine… let’s go! But I get to sleep late at home!”
Headed west through beautiful
New Mexico and into Arizona. The scenery is just beautiful. It’s amazing
that the beauty in nothing is the beauty of everything… there is no mall, no
street lights, no traffic, no planned communities, no starbucks and the
beauty is, that there is nothing! The only sounds you hear are the great
gifts from God… birds! We arrived in the little town of Clifton, Arizona
– home of the PJ Café. This precious little café served Joey his favorite
meal – steak and eggs for breakfast… under $10! The sense of humor in the
café was a Coffee – 9….
Tummy’s full, loving life, we head onto the part of the trip Joey is anxious to find--- the Coronado Trail. 400 switchback turns in mountains! AUGH! After leaving the café, we wait for a train to cross and I ponder what life would be like in this little town… Heading out, we come into Mining Country. The hills are filled with boys and their toys--- Tonka Trucks mining in the hills. The size of the mines are simply amazing! We continue on to the ride of the day--- Big Boy Ride… Coronado Trail. The sights are gorgeous as I try to look on without getting nausea. We climb mountains, look out to the valleys below and are in awestruck wonder at the beauty of God’s country.
(Joey) As Lisa put it in her own little way, we started off the day nice and early.
There is no better view than that to watch the sun rise while in the saddle as you scream down the road or cut into the curves. "Knowing that you will put more miles behind you before breakfast than most will do all week."
As for this day; the Coronado Trail is worth the ride in a big way. Although you are out in the desert or dry lands and the mountains are small; the view is beautiful. That is the views you see from the few times you pull out to stretch you legs or grab a new bottle of water from the ice chest. Views that can only be seen right then and there.
For me, the only views I cared about or saw on the road this day were those of the next curve. Curves that pushed the bike from side to side with an occasional scrape from the foot pegs. Scrapes that would call out, "Bike at lean." And with that, you would pull up a bit and reply with a great big grin, "Too Cool."
Day two finished up Kingman, Arizona in a hotel with just over twelve hours in the saddle. With 544 miles for the day, we averaged out at 44 mph.
Oh yea, the part that Lisa mentioned about the coffee prices, the menu read this way:
Note: You can watch as the bike cuts into the curves of the Coronado Trail by going to our video page. But use caution if you prone to motion sickness for these videos are way cool.
