Day One – Screaming
Across Texas
From Katy, Texas to
Lordsburg, New Mexico
(Lisa) Packed, loaded and ready to roll! We headed out bright and early (4 a.m.)
with great anticipation of a wonderful time. Our first stop was breakfast
at IHOP in San Antonio… very early breakfast with a lovely, wacky waitress
who referred to me as “Beautiful” and Joey as “Handsome”. We noticed
right away that there would be a need to go to the nearest Wal-mart for a
new hat for me. The baseball hat would not
stay
on my head… simply did not want to stay on the windy ride!
L
So we purchased a new ball cap (Red) to match my t-shirt… and off we were to
our next stop… a rest area. The purpose of the rest area stop was for Joey
to stretch his legs, for me to grab another hat (the new one blew off on
I-10… if you see a red ball cap and it’s not too smashed, would you kindly
let me know haha), and to put our “cool” vests on. The great thing about
a husband who plans ahead… he bought ice-gelled vests that soak up the “ice
cold water” in the ice chest and then you put the vests on. BRRR…Rather
nifty if you ask me!
The
evening ride ended in Lordsburg, New Mexico. Gorgeous country!
Interesting restaurants…
After calling it a night, we stopped at the hotel, walked to the KFC across
the street and left to go to the local restaurant – Kranberry’s.
Interesting! Needless to say, we missed our favorite restaurants in Katy,
Texas. Night, night!

Looking forward to tomorrow’s ride!
(Joey) The first
day went off without a hitch, just as every day did.
By the end of the
first day, we were well settled in our seats and our minds cleared and set to
enjoy our ride.
It seems as to whereever our trip will take us, our first day almost always takes us west.
I know that most
people that we talk to or share with about our up and coming ride, give us
their opinions on what they dislike about west Texas... For me, I simply
love west Texas! There is nothing out there to bother you or get in your
way. It is wide open for you to run. The sights are beautiful and the air
is clean.
Once you clear the
traffic and horrible roads of San Antonio the hill country seats you back in
your set and puts a smile on your face. Shortly thereafter the terrain
flattens out for a good stretch as you watch the vegetation change as the
air starts to dry out. From there wind turbines start to build in the
distance as the flat ranch lands start to take giant steps upwards. Then at
a great distance, starting to the south, the mountains start to show
themselves through the heat of the day and then to the north you spot
another.
From there you know
it will not be long and you will be swept away as you cross gently through
the Davis Mountains before the roads before you flatten back out to let your
mind drift away.
Still the air is
quiet and you gather a growing pleasure of being all alone.
West Texas and those
great big empties places, have always been my favorite places and always
will be.
If it is a place for
tourists or other people that flock in great multitudes with the discontent
on what they thought they should have been given... I would rather find a
cactus in the desert to visit with....
The end of our first
day placed us right on schedule in Lordsburg, New Mexico, where we grabbed a
hotel room for the night.
Saddle time for this
day was 15 hours with 926 miles behind us averaging out at 62 mph.
