Day Eight – Colorful Colorado

From Leadville, Colorado to  Lathrop State Park, Colorado

Summary:

Day eight is a day of riding that never leaves the mountains of Colorado.

Starting off, after packing up camp, we'll jump on SH-24 and head south where SH-24 turns northward around the Buena Vista area.  Shortly after that northern turn on SH-24 we will be taking the right fork and picking up SH-285 north.

After miles and miles of Pike Peak National Forest, we will be making a right hand turn on SH-126 toward the town of Pine, Colorado.  From there, we take SH-67 south back to SH-24.

Here is were we will be taking a small brake at the base of Pike's Peak.  A brake long enough to grab a coffee cup and to consider taking the time to ride the Cog Railway to the top or not...  Most likely we won't.

With it being high season for visitors and being a Saturday, I would imagine it won't take long and the crowds of people will quickly push us out looking for some open roads.

Either way, once at the base we will continue our southern route down SH-24 for a short bit before turning off on SH-115 toward Penrose.  From Penrose it is Hwy-50 to SH-69 south to Walsenburg where we will be watching the GPS for Lathrop State Park and a good nights rest.
