Labor Day 2009

September 5-7, 2009

Planned Trip Summary

Three day ride out through parts of west Texas before turning north on State Highway 285 at Fort Stockton.  From there we ride north through Pecos and into New Mexico.  From there we will be staying on that northward push to Artesia, New Mexico where we will be calling it an end for the first day.

Along this days journey we will be catching glimpse of distant mountains and enjoying the open roads and the vast amounts of flat lands.

After a good night rest in a local hotel, we will be starting off the second day heading west on State Highway 82 through the Sacramento Mountains.  A day that should be full of curvy mountain roads.  Or what I like to refer to as, "A Big Boy Ride."

Once through the mountains, we will be turning south at Alamogordo, New Mexico on State Highway 54 toward El Paso and back into Texas.

From there, once back into Texas, we will be heading east on Highway 180 on our way to Guadalupe Mountains National Park where we will be setting up camp for the night.  But before we get there, we will have to be make a stop outside El Paso for a full tank of gas and gather up some groceries for the night.  This being the case because the only thing between El Paso and Guadalupe Mountains is a small town by the name of Salt Flats and there is no guarantee that the only small store there will have what we need or will be open.

Once in Guadalupe Mountains National Park and after setting up the tent and rolling out the sleeping bags, it is off for a scenic walk followed by a pot off coffee as we watch the sun set.

Once morning rolls around, another pot of coffee will be fired up and enjoyed with the rising of a new sun then back on the bike for our long ride home.  A ride that will take down State Highway 54 along the Davis Mountains before turning east on Interstate 10.
