1936 Buick 90

As of September 26, 2009 there is a new car in town.

For what we gathered from the current owner, the car was originally purchased in Wyoming where it was restored around the late 80's to early 90's.  From there, the car was purchased and moved to New Orleans in mid 90's.

At this time, the car was driven around town, to car shows and used in a few weddings.  With Hurricane Katrina in 2005 the car was left to battle the elements and ended up getting flooded.

At first when hearing this and reading it in the classified ad, I did not know what to expect.  In my mind, I figured the car had been completely submerged in salt water and left to rot.  Yet I pondered the idea of owning a car that was over seventy years old.  A pre-war vehicle that comes with history.  A car that took place and is part of our American history.  And a "gangster car" to boot.

After watching the car and returning to the classifieds day after day, we deiced it was worth a look.  To this, my wife and I jumped in the truck and headed to New Orleans.

Upon our arrival we discovered that the car had not been completely flooded.  It had been partially submerged but not completely.  From the water lines you could see the distinct markings that placed the water from mid trunk at the rear of the vehicle to the bottom of one of the front hubcaps.  This leaving the engine and transmission dry along with the majority of the car.

With all that Katrina brought, the car was not a priority for the current owners.  With water in their home, ten feet of water in their church; the car was left in waiting.  Waiting that slowly started taking it's toll out of what was once a pristine vehicle.

After some time talking with the owners about the car and the effects of Katrina, a price was quickly settled and we loaded it up and headed back home to Katy.

As of now, the car is eagerly waiting for it's return to glory.  A process that is expected to start in or around mid 2009.  Until then, the work on the '48 GMC will continue as this beautiful little Buick continues to dream.

One of the best things about all this was and always will be the time my wife and I spent together.

With a 800 mile drive, walking the streets of the French Quarter; it is time and effort well spent.  That and the fact that she truly likes this old car, this Buick is a welcome addition to "Joey's garage"
