Wheels

After the sealer had set for no more than a day, the
back side of the wheels were painted. The back side first because that is the side that won't be seen by the public. With painting the back first, if the edges were messed up when painting the other side, I would rather the back edge to be scuffed or scared and not the front. |
After the back side of the wheels have dried for a
few hours, the wheels were flipped over with the front side up and one by
one, painted. After letting set for 15 minutes, a second coat was applied. Tomorrow, after a light sanding to remove a few runs and specs of dust and bugs that might show up, the wheels will be cleaned once more for a coat of clear. |
| Now clear coated. These wheels, being wheels manufactured for trailers, do not have the attention to detail for that of which would be manufactured for a car of truck. The welds are some what inconsistent with weld splatter peppering the inside of the back half of the wheel. |
If it were not the back side, the side no one would
ever see, I would recommend grabbing a small grinder and cleaning up the
splatter. In this case, I guess, being hurry to see them on the truck, I did not take the time to clean up the splatter and make them perfect. With what you do on yours, that is your call. |
| Now the wheels must set and cure.
Most likely, here in a few days I will be taking them down to a local tire
shop and having the tires mounted. The plan is to have them carefully mounted so that the finish is not damaged. If they will let me help out, I will be jumping on that band wagon. |
Also with the balancing of the wheels, I am going to
insist that only stick on weights are used on the inside of the wheels.
No clips front or back. With clips, the finish is always scratched.
Also with the clips on the back side, chances are they will not clear the
tie rods. If they are not able to get them perfectly balanced with out clipping the front side, I will live with that. |

After letting the clear coat cure for a few days,
the wheels and tires where taken up to Discount Tire to be mounted. I know that most if not all would like to say something negative about me going to Discount Tire for this but the fact of the matter is, "They let me help" and I don't know of any local shops personally that would let me do that. That and Discount Tire has always taken care of me and my daily driver. |
